Big Woolly

The Last Jedi

Big Woolly is a small Toprawan township clustered around a spaceport, where the forest presses close to the built environment. The Far Ranger’s stop there gives Jax Pavan a brief vision of the world as a possible refuge, before the town’s merchant-facing streets become the setting for a carefully disguised meeting.

Setting and Name

The spaceport lies on the outskirts of Big Woolly, in the cool northern reaches of a major landmass. Toprawa’s temperate zones are covered with lush forests that encroach on its ports and outposts; at Big Woolly, the nearby mountain range is draped in native conifers. Its fleece-like appearance gives the township its name.

The settlement has grown around the port in a crescent of closely clustered businesses and homes, extending roughly five kilometers at its widest. The inn selected for Jax and Laranth’s meeting stands at the crescent’s northern tip, along a curving avenue lined with businesses catering largely to merchants. Its respectable clientele makes it a plausible venue for a meeting between successful shipowners and traders.

The Far Ranger’s Stop

The Far Ranger reaches Toprawa ten days after leaving Coruscant. The crew plans to pause before backtracking slightly to take the Thesme Trace toward Dantooine. Carrying ore and ingots, including enough ionite to meet the needs of their allies on Toprawa, the ship berths on an open landing pad away from the main docking complex to attract as little attention as possible.

Near sunset, Jax steps off the ship into the surrounding conifers. Their sweet, tangy scent overwhelms the mechanical smells of the spaceport, and the forest’s vivid life feels both exhilarating and soothing. He compares it with the greater height of the growth on Kashyyyk and the greater lushness of Rodia’s rain forests, but finds that Toprawa’s trees still envelop the port’s constructed surroundings. For a moment, he wishes the group could stay and make the planet their new headquarters.

Thi Xon Yimmon joins him on the landing pad to admire the trees, their ruddy trunks and blue-green foliage touched gold by the setting sun. He points to the contrast between their massive, enduring presence and their ability to bend in the wind. Jax takes in the image of deep roots and strength combined with flexibility, sensing a lesson in the trees’ relation to the wider natural world.

The Meeting in Town

Jax and Laranth travel in disguise to the inn. Jax wears a tailored synthsilk suit and gleaming black boots, presenting himself as a successful freighter captain; Laranth poses as his business partner in flowing merchant-clan robes. Her vivid orange, bell-trimmed mantles conceal her shortened left lekku, an old firefight injury, as well as changes in her skin hue that might give away her emotions or identity.

The precautions extend to their weapons and signals. Laranth keeps her blasters concealed, while Jax leaves his lightsaber with I-Five rather than risk advertising that he is a Jedi in a place where bearing arms would draw notice. A medallion worn as part of Laranth’s headgear is more than decoration: its sigil is meaningful to the meeting’s intended target, an Antarian Ranger. The town’s merchant atmosphere thus provides both cover for the encounter and a reason for the pair’s carefully chosen appearances.
